The Era

The Renaissance was an important era in history as it not only signified expressionism, but was considered a cultural movement which gave rise to various forms of education, creativity and a connection to Modern Ages from the Middle Ages. Prior to the Renaissance, religion was the focus towards Art, education, science and politics. The Renaissance changed such old standards by introducing a humanistic approach to Art. Artists achieved realism in their masterpieces and the depiction of human emotions. This form of expression brought about individuality which changed how people perceived society.

The new way of thinking and learning called Humanism was introduced during the Renaissance. This was the concept that humans can expand their way of living. As such, individuals became Artists, poets, sculptures and learned through literature and were more focused on their culture and human behavior rather than religion. Individuality and freedom of expression was focused, rather than the study of religion and God. It was a philosophy which held man to a greater level in terms of accomplishment. In the Middle Ages, society was focused on people becoming priests and conforming to the religion , whereas the Modern Ages focused on society, the culture of the era, and expression. Through humanism people could be artists, sculpturors, writers, architects and expand on their own level of knowledge and capability.

Humanism brought about the urge to express real emotions, and perception.
Artists utilized perspective through their artworks, by using geometrical lines to emphasis space and distance. Realism also throughout art expressed the emotions that were lacking in the Middle Ages as opposed to the Modern Age. Realism also used lighting, color and a 3D dimension on art, as art was flat and boring prior to the Modern Age.

Michelangelo Di Lodovico Buonarroti Simon

Michelangelo was born in Florence, Italy. By the time he was 13 years old, he was already an apprentice to Domencio, the Artist. When Michelangelo was 23 years of age, he had already created the statue of David. For Michelangelo David expressed what the ideal man should be. Michelangelo used nudity as expression; he also used perspective as you can see in the Sistine Chapel which Michelangelo painted in 4 years and which ultimately left him blind. He also used expression of emotion, as done in The Pieta, where Holy Mary is holding a dead Jesus in her lap.

Michelangelo thought of himself as a scuplturor, however his paintings were more colorful in the expression of his individuality. As an all-around Artist, Michelangelo is significant to the Renaissance because he believed in humanism and expressed realism in all of his work. He is considered a pioneer of the Renaissance and gave awareness to the humanism philosophy. Michelangelo was instrumental in providing a way of thinking that was not only beautiful but cultural in that day of society. Other Artists of that era looked up to Michelangelo, as his work was very creative. Michelangelo paved the way for other Artists to become aware of their individuality and expressing it in artistic
way. Michelangelo contributed realism to all of his works. He was not afraid to use nudity and gender as expression. He expanded on individualism and is considered a pioneer in the Renaissance. While the Renaissance means “Re-Birth”, artists like Michelangelo helped society to be re-born through such freedom of expression. In today’s world such expression has given rise to our Civil Rights and to the Constitution.
